A groundbreaking album from Sonny Rollins, largely for the extended track "Tenor Madness", which runs on for 13 minutes, and features him and Coltrane blowing head to head – redefining the sound of the tenor sax in jazz through the course of that amazing track! Backing is by the CDBrand: Past Perfect (Germany) (Label).
  3. Meztit says:
Sonny Rollins' first effort for Blue Note is a solid, if not stellar, album. Joining Sonny on the five tracks (four by Rollins) of "Volume One" are Donald Byrd, Wynton Kelly, Gene Ramey and the great Max Roach. Roach, by the way, brings much needed cohesion to the recording as a result of his past playing experiences with Rollins. Unfortunately, Byrd and Rollins don't always mesh, and Kelly is often pulled /5(6).

This CD serves as a perfect introduction to the memorable but always underrated trumpeter Woody Shaw, who tragically had only three years left to caliwotnahandses.perhamardiezakmachildwaceptipoming.cong to jazz standards (including "There Will Never Be Another You," a ten-minute rendition of "It Might as Well Be Spring," and a surprisingly effective up-tempo romp through "The Woody Woodpecker Song"), Shaw is heard in a quartet with 9/

This 7 CD set traces the rise of tenor saxophone giant Sonny Rollins from a talented neophyte with a big beat and a big sound, to one of the most commanding melodic and rhythmic innovators of the s.5/5(6).
  6. Goltigor says:
This CD appears under the listing of tenorman Eric Alexander only as a matter of alphabetical convenience, for he is in fact co-billed with pianist John Hicks, bassist George Mraz and drummer Idris Muhammad in this re-creation of a Prestige leaderless date. Anticipating Prestige's 50th anniversary in , producer Todd Barkan combed the files to find out which were the label's most successful.
  7. Zulkirg says:
Grant & company tackle tunes as diverse as George Russels "Ezzthetics" and Rollins' "Solid" with brilliance. You can't go wrong with this disc or "Idle Moments" and the quartets with Sonny Clark plus the sessions with Larry Young. Avoid the later funk, commercial albums /5(19).

composed by Rollins himself. Unlike the piano-less quartets led by Gerry Mulligan and later Bob Brookmeyer, the tenor trio format featured on Way Out West is filled with wide open spaces and intelligent musicianship as the solid interplay is chosen in expert timing by Rollins while Brown and Manne add to the bass-drum backbeat/5(51).
